Minimum Intervention - Maximum Results

Over a glass of Rosé we recently sat out on the verandah and chatted to our mate Dan Eggleton -winemaker / cellarhand / lab dude / ambassador / farmhand / gardener and viticulturist of Ben Murray Wines.
Barossa Valley Rose

Hey Dan, this is a great drop - first tell us about the 2021 Rosé we're drinking:

It's from Old-Vine Marananga Grenache & a small proportion of Old-Vine Pedro Ximinez so it delivers a punchy, concentrated summer wine - dry and refreshing!
"The nose is fresh and lifted with red liquorice, rose petal and rose water, together with the vaguest hints of more savoury, cured-meat and earthy complexity. The palate delivers accordingly, with good tension and dry, long finish." -
91/100 Peter Nixon, The Wine Libertine
It is delicious!

What do you see as your core purpose for Ben Murray Wines?

We make beautiful wines, hand made, vegan friendly, minimum intervention, low food miles, wild fermented, minimal sulphur, local produce. I love my art, wine is my art, it creates happiness and brings people together.

That sounds like a win-win for all of us!!

"Yes, the way that we select great vineyards that produce great wines means that there isn't much more we need to do, rather just care for it and get it into bottle without too much intervention." - Dan Eggleton

But let's go back a bit...Who is Ben Murray?

He makes the wines you want to drink.

There’s not one, but two people behind Ben Murray. Co-owners Dan 'Ben' Eggleton and Craig 'Murray' Thompson are old friends.

They’ve combined forces to launch a wine brand focused on making wines like it should be. And with stunning wines with 90+ points awarded in the 2020 James Halliday Wine Companion 2021...that's not too shabby!

These micro producers like Ben Murray Wines are responding to a growing demand for wines that reflect the terroir, or soil type, from which they were made.
Most significantly, this new generation is responding to the fact that consumers want more than just another bottle of wine. They want wines that are made with passion, they want wines made with honesty and they want something unique.

What inspires your work each day?

I get inspired by the wine world around me, by the great grape growers, and by food and experience providers that I can work with - which is why we are such fierce supporters of Makers & Merchants Barossa (and we couldn't have done it without your support Dan!)

What do you do when you have visitors over the summer?

Our family loves entertaining with a home cooked bbq at the winery property overlooking the Barossa Ranges and if we need to connect with nature an early morning walk at Kaiser Stuhl conservation Park..such a wonderful natural place.
